ONE: A Storm Brews

e28TEop.png

Prologue

Gielinor has changed.

In a strange way, the foundation of Tempest began in the pre-EOC era. It was there that clans roamed the wilderness, free from the shackles of Jagex and their meddling. Clans posted their activity on fansites, like Zybez, Sals, and Tip.it; garnering praise and kindling rivalries.

It was here that acquaintances were made. As gamers plied their trade in clans like Gladiatorz, Damage Inc, Divine Forces, Eternal Honour, Corruption, Runescape Dinasty, The Titans, Downfall, The Rising, Pure Hatred, Genesis, Ronin, and many more, they became more and more familiar with the members of the clans that they fought.

Over time, as the clan world shrank, the game changed dramatically. All the way to the end of pre-EOC Runescape, clans fought for what they thought was right. They scrapped over bragging rights, and for honour, or the opposite.

Over time, the numbers and interest dwindled in RS2, and once EOC was released, the clan world - and our understanding of it - faded into history.

e28TEop.png

But on February 22, 2013, Jagex released Old School Runescape, and interest was renewed one more. Rivalries were reborn, and the clan world started to rebuild. Furthermore, on October 30, 2018, Jagex released OSRS on mobile -- a move that brought many former players back to the game. As these returning players slowly trained their accounts, they watched from the sidelines, seeing the clan world they once knew fall into disrepair.

But in 2020, something happened...

e28TEop.png

As the Coronavirus swept across the world, and many were put into lockdown inside their homes, more players returned to the game than ever before. This surge in activity, mixed in with the two years that most of the mobile players had been training their accounts for, culminated in a desire for the 'old' clan world to return.

Whispers began to disseminate.

Those longing for a new home may soon find it.

A sleeping giant of the clan world, True 2k8, was creating something new.

Throughout the mid summer, True spoke with many former clan leaders and ranks. He spoke with old friends. Old heroes of the clan world. Former clanmates, and former rivals. Members of clans ranging from 2005, all the way to the current day of 2020. Before long, a small team of boomers had been assembled.

Soon, a storm would be upon the clan world.

Chapter 1: The Storm Swells [Summer 2020]

On August 13, 2020, the floodgates opened, and from the storm, Tempest was born.

Aiming to fight primarily in F2P pvp, but also learn P2P, and have many community events mixed in, Tempest offered a home for long lost clanners who wanted to reside in a friendly and welcoming clan. True proved a masterful recruiter, bringing together members from almost every minor and major clan of the past fifteen years.

The first month was certainly eventful; there were many CWRIs, P2P trips, and most importantly, F2P pvp fights to enjoy.

Of note, Tempest won a neck and neck PVM competition against WildMight, picking up an Elysian Spirit Shield on the final day of the competition to come from behind and claim victory. Additionally, there were numerous clusters in the F2P wild to take part in, bringing smaller clans into the fold to fight against the big boys for the first time in an age. The F2P PVP scene - long considered a dead game mode - was slowly rising back to popularity.

Chapter 2: The Swell Rises [Autumn 2020]

During the Autumn of 2020, several rivalries were developed. Namely, True vs Bles, and Tempest vs Savageraven. As the ebb and flow of the clan world circulated around Tempest, hilarious days were had when Bles/Timebeast/Veto/Sooner Rex/Sir Achillez made his intro to Tempest. Within a day the topic had 19 pages and 5k views. Similarly, Savageraven created a Tempest Diss Track, where he merrily cursed Tempest and specifically, True 2k8.

e28TEop.png

It wasn't all jokes, however. It was during this time that the F2P renaissance was born. True, The End, and the other leaders worked tirelessly to find F2P fights and revive the once decimated F2P wilderness. Before long, even legacy clans like Divine Forces and Chivalry Legions were fighting in F2P. P2P only clans like Revenant and Ancient Fury also ventured into F2P fights. Wilderland and The Rising grew in numbers. Country clans like WildMight, Vitality, Arroz were also pulling high in F2P.

Small PK and CWA teams like Warm Mafia, Irish Grave Diggas, and Killer Penguinz ventured up to take part in the fun. For the first time in many years, the lonesome wasteland that is the F2P was once again bustling. Everyone was acknowledging Tempest's role in breathing life into this relic of game mode.

Chapter 3: The Winter Blizzard [Winter 2020/2021]

By November / December of 2020, the clan world was shifting. Most of the early winter was characterized by crashing attempts by Reign of Terror - the clan who had been attempting to threaten Tempest since the day they first opened. Tempest had always prided itself on a variety of events - and this continued through the winter - but there was an obvious shift towards F2P PVP focused events. There were exciting fights against clans like WL, Vitality, Rev, and AF, and RoT attempted to make an appearance at most of them. As Tempest's pulls increased, they appeared more of a threat, and thus the plot thickened.

e28TEop.png

Tempest was now firmly entrenched in a battle for the ages. While they grew, so did the clans around them. In a sight no one thought we would ever see again, legacy clan Violent Resolution also returned to fight in F2P. Additionally, and perhaps even more surprisingly than that, so did Echo of Silence. Their re-opening spurred many exciting new opportunities in the wild, and with VR and EOS now capable of pulling 60+, new opponents to fight were on the horizon for Tempest.

e28TEop.png

The scene was set for a dramatic winter. As the Christmas season passed, Tempest grew in size. Then came perhaps the most memorable fight in Tempest's short history. RoT showed up to a fight Tempest had scheduled with WL, their names all changed to "PM Dark####". They proceeded to stand on one DD while the seamen effortlessly farmed through their names. Tempest alt accounts were set up accounts at Ferox to watch their complete decimation. In what has to go down as one of the worst tactical blunders in OSRS history, RoT leadership sheepishly had all their members change back to their original names back after the fight.

e28TEop.png

Twice more in January, Tempest pulled more than 80 brave seamen to fights. In a Jagex Cup style CWA prep fight, Tempest pulled 100 with friends to fight Ancient Fury in three rounds. It was clear that the Tempest storm was growing. Before, other clans saw the Tempest light as a distant kingdom. But as the light grew, it became tougher to ignore. The gathering storm was arriving on the Gielinor shores.

e28TEop.png

February and March were characterized primarily with focus on CWA due to Jagex Cup rumours. With this focus, Tempest grew in stature, winning comprehensive victories over the surrounding clans. For the most part, rounds were exciting to take part in, entertaining to watch, and by-and-large, competitive between everyone. By doing this, the quality of each member improved and a more clear picture of what the clan world looked like in terms of tactics & organization was taking shape.

Chapter 4: Tempest Tornados Through Gilienor

March of 2021 was the first time in almost a decade the power of the clan world had very clearly changed hands. Reign of Terror had neither the pulls nor the quality to consistently compete with their contemporaries. Tempest was now widely considered one of the most influential F2P clans in the game. Consistently pulling 70+, a large memberlist filled with quality of the past & present, stable leadership, and the drive to perform. Meanwhile, RoT and their alliance of minions were losing their grip on dominance that had been displayed throughout most of OldSchool Runescape. Their pulls had been reduced to half of that before Tempest opened. Their intel - particularly on Tempest - had long been a shadow of what it once was. The days where MattyB was asking True 'how my shit taste', were long gone. As a result, there was a marked shift in focus from many surrounding clans (Revenant, Ancient Fury, Reign of Terror) towards the pure clan scene that took place on Saturdays & Sundays. Tempest, however, continued their focus on performing in the main clan scene.

e28TEop.png

While most of Spring was characterized by Tempest tearing through any ROT crashing attempts, mid sized clans like Violent Resolution and Deathrow attempted to pipe up and merge together to challenge Tempest in F2P. Time and time again, they were beat back with ease as their attempts at staying relevant in the F2P wilderness became more and more disillusioned. The rest of May and June were characterized by more community building and fun events by Tempest. Over the May long weekend, Tempest hosted 7 community events over 4 days. During this time, the clan grew in size. Soon, it boasted over 110 active members and applicants, a feat very much considered impossible for a new clan throughout most of OSRS. The pulls proved it. Over again over again, Tempest would pull 75+ throughout May and June. Fights included AF, WL, clusters, and even a clean 1 v 1 vs ROT which resulted in Tempest clearing them right off the map.

e28TEop.png

During this time, the focus also shifted back to Tempest forums. One of the more legendary posts of all time was created; the Jebrim AMA. It all came about one random night after Jagex added the games room to the GE. In a typical display of community strength, Tempest spurred 30 people on Teamspeak to play at the games room on its release. Jebrim was there, and squared off against Tempest Officer The End, losing over 50 games to him, before agreeing to do an AMA. What followed was almost 40 pages of pure mayhem. You'll have to read it for yourself.

Chapter 5: Tempest Thunders Through Summer

e28TEop.png

As June progressed, the clan world shifted once more. As Tempest maintained strong pulls, consistent clean fights, and endless entertainment throughout the Euros, not every clan was experiencing the same fate. After suffering through a challenging Winter and Spring, RoT took on many new members from the recently deceased clan "Sovereign". The first fight after this pseudo-merge was the start of the alleged "Summer of Terror", where RoT massed up "130+" members to fight the mighty Tempest in the first attempted competitive 1v1 in over six months. It didn't go as smoothly as they planned.

e28TEop.png

Before long, they were back to their usual pulls, and Tempest was still at the peak of their prowess. Mixed in with the F2P scraps were dozens of clean P2P single spell fights that were becoming something of regularity for the seamen. Slowly but surely, Tempest went from a F2P boomer retirement home, to a capable and worthy P2P clan in the wilderness of Gielinor. Always looking to mix up fight locations, these scraps offered something a little different, and before long, members started to really enjoy the style of scrap and improved dramatically in experience and quality.

e28TEop.png

While developing their P2P skills with strong pulls and engaged members, other clans were struggling with the reality of the end of the era of corona. Slowly but surely, as the world once again returned to normal, more and more got back to their usual lives, or travelled and holidayed through the sunny summer that was being experienced across the globe. From the Euros, to the heat waves -- fewer clans looked capable of surviving the summer. After Sovereign perished, Wilderland reached out to us and told us they would also be closing their doors. We agreed to one final large-scale battle to send them off the right way. In true Tempest fashion, over 115 seamen turned out to fight in the mighty blue capes. Wilderland, pulling excellent as well, put up a fine showing as they sailed off into their own sunset. RoT, attempting to ruin the day, attempted to crash with next to no-one. It had the opposite of the desired effect; publicly showing everyone just how far they had fallen in just three weeks since their pseudo merge, and the shell of the clan they had become. No longer the mighty and feared warriors of the past, but rather a clan that needed to cower in single and watch as the kings battled in the open field.
