Did Jagex ever find out who Cheeky Alerb was?

It is pretty easy to identify anyone who played the game. The amount of info Jagex collects on a person is significant.

How was he seemingly able to make whoever they wanted disconnect on the spot?

We ran a lot of investigation into that and were quite confident it wasn't due to anything within RuneScape, it was probably more to do with leaked IPs from other sources.

Did Jed have anything to do with it like some people have believed?

I would think that is unlikely, some of the timings didn't match up.

You’re a beast, thanks for all the work you’ve done in the past.

    It was a pleasure

What are your current goals on OSRS?
Get my quest cape back then get the diaries done.

What’s your favorite thing to do on OSRS right now?

    Currently it is slayer

What’s the most game-breaking/craziest bug you’ve ever witnessed in OSRS that got through and was abused?
and what’s one that was caught before being abused?

The biggest abused one was a complicated gold dupe which involved using 6 different areas of the game map to stall commands long enough to create the dupe. It had about 40 different steps to do.

Although the most fun one was a certian character typed into chat would log everyone who saw it off,

People treat 7 like the holy grail, I personally felt 6 was better if not one of the best FFs (certainly my fav).

FF14 MMO is very good, played it since ARR came out in 2013. It's not heavy on time commitment either patch cycles have big gaps and content doesn't take long to clear. Even if you're not into MMORPG endgames like raiding, I highly recommend the story.

My son plays it, I shall have to give it a go.

Crack the clue was amazing btw, who came up with the idea for it and were you surprised it took so long to find the helmet? Id love to see more stuff like that added to the game

That was my idea, it was meant to be difficult but it I didn't expect it to last a year. I was very relived when someone got it as I was beginning to think it was too hard. Giggity,

How much of a threat/problem does jagex REALLY think gold sellers are? Is it really even a priority for them? I'm sure they know as much as anyone that 90% of the accounts in f2p lumby are gold sellers right?

Not really much of a threat anymore.  But they need to keep on top of it so it does't get out of hand.

Is there any super secret Easter eggs that have been in the game that you can tell us about that to your knowledge no one has found yet?

Sadly not, or if there are I don't know them....

Do you remember organising the random fight with Corruption? It was some weird range war at the wizards tower lol

Also I remember having a "meeting" with some other top clans officials to discuss clanning. It seems like these meetings happened a few times and not really much came of them - is this something that was down to others at Jagex blocking suggestions?

Ah yes, I remember that. THat was fun.  I think I called Corruption out for something and then had to die to them in a war.... I made it easy for them.

There were many meetings with clan leaders over the years, but getting changes through into the game was always a struggle.

I saw a video several years back of Mod Chrisso I believe? getting their rotten potato stolen from them, what was Jagex's reaction to this? Did Mod Chrisso get in trouble for being so oblivious to being lured? Has any other J Mod been lured for their potato or lost it?

No one got in trouble for it, it was a bug which should not have happened. After it happened a variable was added to accounts which needed to be activated to use it, so it could not have happened again. Paul Gowers Jmod once got hacked (before they were IP locked) but the hacker didn't know how to use it to cause real mayhem, Paul's Jmod had the power to turn servers off.... ?

Do you miss working for JAGeX?

Yep, you don't work somewhere for 15 years without missing it. In particular I missing working with the team and community and having an impact on the game I love.

Thanks for answering the prev questions! Big insight into you, seem like a genuine bloke honestly. But I think Jagex always had a penchant for recruiting devs and mouthpieces that really cared about the players, not every MMO has this.

Also as an FF fan and speaking of MMOs, did you ever play FF14:ARR?

Yes, in the last 5 years Jagex have certianly focused on recruiting people who care about the game. I've never played FF14 - no other FF even compares to 7.

If you could go back and change something from your time at Jagex what would it be?

I think I would speak out more about the removal of the wilderness. I think that crippled clans and butchering the wilderness in the way that it was was unnecessary and the real world trading issue was used as an excuse to change something the Head of Runescape thought was bad design.

What do you think is the biggest problem or challenge the game is currently facing?

Right now the biggest issue for me is that Jagex and the community are not thinking out-of-the-box enough and so the game won't innovate anymore. You'll get updates which are innovative in the realms of RuneScape but you won't see anything new like DMM again.

Does Jagex mainly focus on RS3 or OSRS?

When I left it was OSRS

Saw you mention polling but how do you feel about it now?  It seemed to originally build good will but now i see it as detrimental to the game, players hate change and love to spite others, i think it long run its course and its a shame people still for some reason believe if an update happens then EOC will follow it a day later.

Was the climbing boots going to 76k leaked in advance to players, thats one i used to always and still sometimes do hear about.

Polling doesn't do what it needs to now, it doesn't allow the team to service smaller communities within the game. I think the solution is to educate the community rather than enforce some arbitrary requirement to vote. it's a bit disappointing that we knew this was a problem 2 years ago and it still hasn't been resolved.

I think climbing boots was leaked by someone to a small group of their friends, I haven't any proof but I think it happened.

Looking back at your time @ Jagex do you think/know of any other Jagex Mods that participated in things similar to Jed? Thru all my years playing Ithere have been plenty of exploits and a few dupes. Were any of these a result of a Jagex Moderator that was kept quiet?

Yeah, there were some shady going ons. One QA guy didn't report a bug then abused it after released.... he got fired and I am sure that happened multiple times.

In some ways, the gaming community is a hive of scum and villany. Despite the many wonderful people, the clanning community in particular is known for nefarious acts. Do you believe there are any ways in which companies such as Jagex can combat these negative aspects of gaming? Do you believe that if people's online profiles contained identifying information, this would decrease their willingness to abuse others in and out of the game?

Oh yes, with the information Jagex holds on people it doesn't take much to find out who everyone is, where they live, what their mums maiden name is etc etc. We've also done significant work with the police to identify supposedly hidden expert who have used RuneScape and we can generally track them down in 24 hours. God knows how much Google knows about us all.

How can we convince Jagex to do PvP updates? Asking for a friend...

Tell your friend to create a business case that looks at PvP as a whole.

Favorite Era of Runescape? You can list two, 1 by nostalgia, 1 by objectivity.

2005-7 as that was when I was in clans.

Why are website updates so hard to do? Is there really only one IT guy? Boss highscores broke highscores. They "cant" do hc pvp only ironmen because there's no one available to the highscores. Boss highscores took forever because of the same reason. The poll on the website still doesnt separate skipped votes. Like what is the deal?

The modules that run the website are many years old and the databases are so big the work to change anything is huge.

On a similar note. Jagex has had record breaking profits in 2018 and 2019 and now 2020 surely. How come there are less employees than during pre eoc era then? How can the investors not recognize the potential growth and just dump resources into the game? OSRS makes half the profit now yet has less than half the RS3 devs not even counting mtx artists. Is there anything we can do to help OSRS get the staff it deserves/needs?

The difference now is that all the money is not being spaffed on failed projects like Transformers Universe.

So back in the day, there were St. louis worlds, canada worlds, florida worlds, etc. Were they all hosted in said location or were they all just hosted on one server location and then the worlds were given specific areas?

Yeah, mostly they were hosted in those locations, I don't think the datacentres have moved that much. Except Australia as their internet sucks.

Thoughts on Venezuelans invading OSRS and farming gold to make a living in their crumbling economy?

I am pleased I do not live in Venezuela

I feel like Jagex never really gets that the majority of their playerbase is in the USA. When you picture the playerbase, did you think to yourself you're making games for americans or did you picture that you made games for your fellow countrymen?

I am pleased I do not live in the USA
