Give a cat some quality food, fresh clean water and plenty of scritches and it'll be happy. Same for dogs with the addition of taking it out for walks. Vet's bills will quickly add up if something happens, of course, but divided over the animal's lifetime it ain't so bad (unless you get one of those dog breeds).
