The squeezing and demonizing of Russia for the past 70+ years certainly didn't help. Russia thinks themselves as the most important country in the world (by years of indoctrination since way before the Tzars fell). State owns the church. Putin is defenitely crazy but considering what he and his country have been dealing with not entirely unexpected. Russia economy is shit. Apparently they have cities with 100k people that only have 1 trade (ie. fisherman). Dangerous nostalgia dreams.
