    That aside, there are a number of people who contributed to designs of new types of electric guitars that would eventually define the instrument as its own, including people like Les Paul who was an early pioneer of developing some of the most incredibly functional solid body electric guitars that served as the inspiration for Gibson’s guitar that was named after him (using one of his own designs).

     

    The person you’re probably thinking of is Leo Fender, who founded Fender Guitars and invented his own line of Solid Body Electric guitars. He absolutely was deaf, but their first marketable guitar wasn’t produced until 1946, a full 15 years after the Rickenbacker corporation designed their original prototype.
