Personally i have only been scammed once, lost my mith set due to a dude telling me he could trim it with a chiesel and a sapphire. Gave it to him, he tele'd out. I've been scalped but even when I was 11ish and just starting the game I was overly suspicious of basically everyone and stuff like armour trimming made zero sense to me since I couldn't find it in the in-game skill guides(and it also just simply didn't make sense). They told me they had just been hacked and cleaned and asked to borrow some gear to make some money.
