At most they probably thought, ok these guys are planning to hijack some planes and make a few demands, nothing we haven't dealt with before, so they didn't take it that seriously. The only convincing part of the conspiracy theories from this event are how the hijackers pulled it off; the big one being their lack of experience flying.
