The song had a bit of a chaotic tone, with a similar fast paced riff going throughout the song.  There was a lot of anger in the song.  I enjoyed the song, but my name definitely from a less cool source.

While I was in THE clan from 2005-2006, there was one fight in particular that I remember from 2005 where DS took on The Alliance as a whole (Gladz + THE + TMRD + Jagz) in an official war and won by a massive margin. DS had pulled around 130 members while The Alliance pulled 300+ members. The only other clan to have pulled off something like this against The Alliance was DI.

Agree with this and with Bunty.  Around the DS closure, DI/DS were in their own league.  Corr was a solid #3 and DF was somewhere in the 4-6 range with EH and VR.  EH, VR, and DF were growing off each other at the time and gaining numbers.  DI was hunting PK trips of those 3 clans and trying to hinder their growth - EH, VR, and DF weren't seriously competitive with DI at the time, but were going from pulls of 60-70 in summer 2006 to 80-100 in spring 2007.  Corr was doing something similar, hungry for fights with those newer clans gaining numbers (likely sparking and fueling the budding DF-CORR rivalry).  DF was climbing up in the ranks, becoming more competitive with the older top clans, and, though getting DS members helped, it just sped up the rise.

In my experience fighting DS while in Gladz, ST, and EH, DS' strength was that they were ahead of their time in spamming and had large numbers.  Check these spam piles from 2006:
 

I don't remember about how the power dynamic was or wasn't changing between DI and DS at the time of closure.  So I'd defer to Brian's expertise and earlier post on that.  But I would also say that it was becoming quite hard for DS to get serious fights.  No one (other than DI) was willing to fight them for long periods of time.

Date of death for Krystal/Scumpr's reasons.

By knowing your date of death you get to "live" for several more years, potentially.  Imagine knowing you died at 68 - would you still retire at 65, or would you save up til 55ish and decide you had enough money to make it to your final days?  Saving yourself from working for 10 years is likely greater value than avoiding a single regret.

That's awesome.  I'm jealous you live in such a good spot for it.  In my opinion, jigging is also funner than trolling.  Its more active in what you're doing and you get to feel the fish hit. 🙂

Welcome, spent about a month in Costa Rica (though I was at Playa Grande) and enjoyed some of the great fishing there (so many mahi mahi).  What do you normally fish for?

Gen 1 games are the most nostalgic for me, I grew out of pokemon quickly, but they were awesome games.

On trading cards, I also only really had the first gen of cards, so I voted those although I don't have a strong preference.  I did have some second gen. Japanese cards.  My parents recently found my old cards cleaning out their house and sent them to me.  Pro-tip: If you have old cards laying around and they're in good condition, they're worth a LOT of money.  I've sold off some of them and I'm projecting that my old cards are going to pay for a new Harley-Davidson for me. I know I had a 1st ed. Charizard somewhere but it wasn't in the binder my parents sent (in perfect condition, those are selling around 300-400k).

On the show, I've been watching the new (Alola?) series with my daughter and I think it is better than the first.  I'm not sure what generation that is.

Context: Had a kid when I was 24, wife was 20; kid is 8 now. kid is girl.

If you have kids:

• Have your kids changed you in any way? And if so, how? Did you become more mature or had more agency to become mature?
  
  It is hard to disentangle what changes were due to having a kid versus me maturing since I had my kid at a pretty young age.
  
  - I subtly saw myself partaking in less risky activity and didn't realize I was doing it until later.  When I go skiing, I'm slower.  When I kayak in the winter, I wear a drysuit. I started putting safeguards in for dangerous work situations.
  - Having to care for a family rather than just me caused me to be more motivated to finish my schooling quickly, get a good job, and perform well in the job.  If it were just me, I could be a bum if I failed and go back with my parents.  Not the case with a family.
  - Caused me to be less selfish.  Primarily towards my wife.  Taking care of a kid takes a lot of sacrifice and it can't be all on one person.
   
• What is the best thing about having kids?
  
  - Love and purpose.  I don't have much in the way of family or friends near me.  I have work friends, but I grew up on the east coast (where my wife and I were raised) and live on the west coast now.  Just me and my girls versus the world.
  
   
• What is the worst thing about having kids?
  
  - Personal sacrifice.  Your life doesn't become about you anymore.  4 nights a week = swim lessons (~8 hr a week).  Kid goes to bed at 8 pm - can't leave the house without paying for a sitter. Want to do something on the weekend that you enjoy but your kid doesn't?  Well, you can, but if you get time to yourself for fun, you feel like you're putting the burden on your wife.

Would I recommend?  I love my daughter and I'm happy with my situation, but I don't think everyone is cut out for the kid life and I think that's ok.  One thing I've struggled with is that I've got little support outside of my wife.  I would recommend prospective parents make sure they've got a good support system because otherwise it gets expensive very quickly with sitters or can quickly drain one's sanity.

Also, I started young, which has advantages and disadvantages.  Reaping many of the advantages now, but when I started off living on a college stipend and some university teaching, it was a lot of nights of $2-3 family-sized spaghetti or curry rice meals.  Wife never had a chance to go to school.  Being financially stable can ease a lot of the stress.

- Taking on workload rather than trusting in others.

- Fast food on work nights.

Helms Deep felt more ominous and "life or death" for the characters than the Gondor battle of Return of the King because of the fight setting.

Hey Steve, thanks for doing this AMA.

Becoming ranked in three separate top clans in a relatively short period of time is an impressive feat.  I think it shows that you really brought something to the table when you joined a clan.  I never was in a clan with you, but had interacted with you here and there during my time with EH.  I always got the sense that your strengths were as a motivator (which you referred to in an earlier post), caller (your ranks were generally related to leading fights, and I remember you taking lots of fall ins), and as a community figure (you were extremely friendly and easy to work with).  What would you say your weaknesses were as a leader?

Which clan do you think you had the greatest positive impact in of Corr, VR, and EOS?

You ranked Kill Orgy as one of your favorite clan/teams alongside VR - what made them a good experience for you?

I feel like the leadership styles in VR, Corr, and EoS would be quite different.  What do you think were the most effective characteristics of the following folks (trying to focus on VR leadership that hasn't been spoken to yet; focusing on Corr leadership that we've seen a lot of comments on in other AMAs with mixed opinions): Prannoy, Mr Nickos, Jeffa12, Vechtetoe, Robtokill, Andy4309, Demonchild

99 range in ~2005.  Trained at fire giants near mage bank using bronze/iron arrows.  Remember it being ~25k exp an hour.

Going to cheat and comment on RS2 times as I'm not up to date on what is happening currently.

I would favor EoS because one of their more consistent weaknesses in RS2 was inconsistency of pulls and, if on even options as stipulated, they weren't going to give up a fight easily.  No disrespect to VR, they were a scary force during the period as well.

210 options of current VR (with knowledge of tactical advancements over the past ~15 years) versus 330 options of 2007 VR, uncapped PKRI.
